Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget Your Roof!

After a long winter (or even a short one), it’s time to spring clean! And, this year, don’t forget your
roof. What do you need to do to make sure your roof has the TLC it needs to maximize its life?

Get the Gunk Out of Your Gutters

Hopefully you do this in the fall, too, but it’s worth doing at least twice a year. When snow melts or
spring rains start, you want the water hitting your roof to be moved away from your home quickly!
While you’re working on the gutters take a look and ensure they’re functional and free from
significant wear and tear. If your gutters are rusted or corroded, you may need to repair or replace
them.

Keep Tree Branches Away from the Roof

If a nearby tree is growing too close to your roof, or hanging over your roof, it’s time to do some
trimming! You’ll most likely want to call a professional, but it’s better to get the tree trimmed now
than to have a branch hit your roof. And, bonus, you’ll have fewer leaves to clog those gutters.

Check from the Inside, Out

Head into your attic or crawlspace to see if there are any signs of mold or water damage. Staining
or mildew smells mean it’s time to call a professional in to check on the cause of the moisture
before more damage occurs.

Take a Look at the Roof Itself

Are you collecting leaves or pine needles up there? Those need to go. Do you see moss, fungus, or
algae on the roof? Those can cause leaks over time as they degrade the roofing material. Finally,
are there any missing shingles, or damage near chimneys, vents, or ridge lines?

The roof over your head takes care of you, so remember to take care of it while you’re spring
cleaning this year! If you see signs of damage, be sure to call a roofing professional to take a look.
Don’t let a small problem turn into a big one!
